  • beehiiv: Lite plan billed monthly, priced by total subscribers; 0% take rate, plus Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ as beehiiv states it. (source)
  • Kit: Free plan up to 10,000 subscribers; 3.5% + 30¢ per payment, which Kit says is the only cost of selling. (source 1, source 2)
  • Figures are monthly averages in USD, rounded to the dollar for display. Patreon is not shown because we could not confirm its payment processing rates on a live page.

How this is calculated

Everything is a monthly average in US dollars. Monthly subscribers pay once a month. Yearly subscribers pay once a year, so each counts as one twelfth of a payment a month. “Subs” means paid subscribers.

gross = monthly subs × monthly price
         + yearly subs × yearly price ÷ 12
payments = monthly subs + yearly subs ÷ 12
fees     = gross × platform %
         + gross × processing %
         + gross × Billing %
         + payments × fee per payment
you keep = gross − fees − plan price
  • Plans are picked by total subscribers, paid plus free, because that is what every platform’s limits count. Each platform is priced on its cheapest plan that allows paid subscriptions, billed monthly.
  • Blogaly takes 0%. Payments go to your own Stripe account, so Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ per successful charge on domestic cards and 0.7% of recurring Billing volume (pay as you go) apply.
  • Platforms are only shown up to the subscriber counts we could confirm a price for. Fees were checked on 8 November 2026; the sources are listed under the results.

Questions about fees

How much does Substack take from paid subscriptions?

Substack keeps 10% of each subscription payment. Stripe then charges its own fees: 2.9% + 30¢ per US card payment and 0.7% for recurring billing, according to Substack’s help center (checked 8 November 2026). Publishing on Substack is free.

What fees does Stripe charge?

Stripe’s standard US rate is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful charge on a domestic card, plus 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is needed. Stripe Billing, which runs recurring subscriptions, adds 0.7% of billing volume on pay-as-you-go pricing (stripe.com, checked 8 November 2026).

Do beehiiv or Kit take a cut?

beehiiv takes 0% of paid subscription revenue, but paid subscriptions need its Lite plan, which costs $59 a month billed monthly for up to 1,000 subscribers; beehiiv says Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ applies. Kit’s Free plan includes paid newsletters for up to 10,000 subscribers and charges 3.5% + 30¢ per transaction, which Kit says is the only cost. Both checked 8 November 2026.

How much does Blogaly take?

Nothing. Blogaly charges a 0% platform fee on member payments, on every plan. Payments go to your own Stripe account, so only Stripe’s standard fees apply. Paid tiers start on the Publisher plan at $35 a month for up to 1,000 members; Business is $239 a month for up to 10,000 members. Above that, talk to us about a custom plan.

Is a 0% platform fee always the cheapest option?

No. Blogaly charges a flat monthly plan price instead of a share of your revenue, so the saving grows with your revenue. With a small list or a low price, a free plan that takes a percentage can leave you with more. The calculator shows which is cheaper for your numbers.

What does the calculator leave out?

It assumes US domestic card payments. It leaves out sales tax and VAT, refunds and disputes, international card and currency conversion surcharges, app-store purchases, free trials and discounts, and the cost of a custom domain.
